Sleigh Bells are BACK (at least sometime soon, I mean).
That right there is the bonkers trailer released today for the upcoming album from Alexis Krauss and Derek E. Miller, the distortion-drenched, eardrum-shattering, always fun but sometimes kinda scary duo known as Sleigh Bells. Their sophomore effort will be called Reign of Terror. Which is awesome/again, kind of scary.
I think I get particularly excited about Sleigh Bells news because, initially, I was so opposed to them. For example, when my friend played me “Crown on the Ground” for the first time, he prefaced it by saying “Check this out, this is the most abrasive thing I’ve ever heard.” And I immediately agreed because, well, it was! I mean listen to that crazy shit! However, I found Sleigh Bells so off-putting at first, that I was fascinated by them. So when Treats came out last year, I downloaded it and…….liked it? Once I came to terms with Sleigh Bells’ aesthetic, i.e. sing-songy playground vocals coupled with thundering hip-hop inflected beats, all smothered in the loudest, most distorted, over-modulated guitar sound possible, I came to appreciate how catchy the songs were. The riffs were great, Alexis Krauss’s voice was sexy as hell, and of course their was “Rill Rill”. That being said, Treats remains a difficult album to listen to in full because it just straight up fucking pummels you. And, if the snippet of music in this trailer is any indication, Reign of Terror will be in the same vein. Sick.
So watch as Alexis Krauss carefully manicures her perfect wig-like hair while grimy tour footage of the band in full head-bang crazy mode pops in and out. Do you think she’s seeing anyone?!
