Conservative Response to Occupy Wall Street: “Oh yeah? Well you’re smelly and have cell phones!”

So by now I assume you’ve all heard about this Occupy Wall Street big crazy protest thing.  People have been camping out all over the place in New York for almost a month in order to speak out against corporate greed and the general fucked up-edness of the current American economic climate.  Which is great!  Let me take this opportunity to say that I think this whole movement is awesome and has my full support.  As a less than gainfully employed college graduate about to have to start paying back my student loans with the not-money that I currently possess thanks to the shitty economy/job market, I’m all for sticking it to the outrageously wealthy banks/corporations who created said shitty economy/job market.  If I could, I’d be right there in New York with all those dirty hippies and a sign of my own.

And it seems their perceived dirty hippie-ness is one of the main talking points for Occupy Wall Street’s detractors.  Obviously this is something that the pundits at Fox News would latch onto.  It’s petty, superficial, inconsequential to the message/goals of the movement, but most importantly it is a way to make them look bad.  “Look everybody, look at all the weirdos! DISCREDITED.” -Bill O’Reilly.

Now I can’t really defend the unwashed, drugged out appearance of many of the protestors.  That’s what they look like, you got ‘em!  But the argument against Occupy Wall Street that bothers me most and that I think is the dumbest is the whole, “You all wanna bring down the corporations, but you organized the whole thing on iPhones and computers and the internet and they all come from corporations IN YOUR FACE!” thing.  This is just a stupid, really catty and cheap attempt to take a shot at Occupy Wall Street.  First of all, the internet is not a corporation.  It’s up there, floating above our heads whether there’s a company to run it or not, it’s science look it up.  Second, and in all seriousness, I don’t think the organization’s goal is to “bring down the corporations.”  From what I’ve read, the main thrust is to end the monetary control that big businesses wield over Washington, along with other goals such as taxing the rich more (aka fairly), ending corporate welfare, instituting affordable healthcare, etc.  So it’s silly to accuse the protestors/organizers of being hypocritical for using technology to put this thing together because technology comes from corporate America, because the destruction of corporate America is not what we’re talking about here.

It’s just so short sighted and dismissive to harp on protestors’ use of corporate-made products because, honestly, DUH.  How the fuck would any of this get done without cell phones and computers?  Criticizing the means by which the movement got started is extremely petty and represents a fundamental misunderstanding of what Occupy Wall Street is trying to do.  We all love our iPhones and the other stuff corporations create and we don’t want those things to go anywhere.  We just want those corporations to pay their share in taxes, stop controlling the government and just generally HELP PEOPLE with their exorbitant wealth.  Also, the ones responsible for destroying the US economy should be punished.  SEVERELY.  Got it?  So anybody who posts something like this and actually thinks it’s clever, smart, or makes sense, just does not understand what’s happening.

Come on conservatives, I know you can do better than that!  Get at those dirty SOCIALISTS!
